The story follows the titular superhero as he navigates the balance between his alien heritage and his human upbringing. He stands as a symbol of truth, justice, and the human spirit in a world that increasingly sees these values as outdated.

Superman is a crucial film for James Gunn, Warner Bros. Discovery, and DC as a whole. It marks the first release in the revamped DC cinematic universe, an ambitious effort to rebuild after the mishandling of the grim and unheroic Snyderverse. (Yes, this is an opinion piece, if that wasn’t already obvious.) So, did the Superman trailer deliver?

Honestly, it’s hard to say. As a teaser trailer, it didn’t reveal much, which is expected. However, there were moments that sparked hope, others that made me cringe, and a few that made me laugh outright.

The trailer opens with our titular hero crash-landing in a bloody heap, seemingly in the Arctic near the Fortress of Solitude. It’s not exactly the inspiring introduction for the unshakable hero we’re meant to believe in. Still, I can see the rationale behind showing him in a moment of vulnerability—it’s a bold choice that sets a more human tone for the character.

One of the challenges many writers face with Superman is making him vulnerable or relatable. That said, I’d take seeing him crumpled in the snow over Bryan Singer’s interpretation of him as a deadbeat dad and a peeping Tom any day. So, James Gunn, you haven’t lost me yet. However, I do have one major concern: why does Superman look like this? Why does he look like Tony Khan?
For those unfamiliar, Tony Khan is the owner of All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and the awkward, Melvin-esque son of Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan. I might need to include a picture of him here just so you can understand my pain. This leads me to another gripe: David Corenswet doesn’t seem physically imposing enough to play Superman. Henry Cavill was the perfect Superman—trapped in movies with terrible scripts, sure—but he had the size and presence to embody the Man of Tomorrow. By contrast, Corenswet looks downright puny in some shots.

On a brighter note, Nicholas Hoult appears to be an excellent choice for Lex Luthor. That scene in the trailer where he glares at Superman flying past the LuthorCorp building? The look of pure hatred screamed "Lex" to me. It’s already shaping up to be a much better portrayal than Jesse Eisenberg’s career-stalling performance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Back to the positives: the movie is visually vibrant—a refreshing change from Zack Snyder’s colorless, lifeless aesthetic. And Rachel Brosnahan seems like a solid pick for Lois Lane. Having loved her in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, I have high hopes for her portrayal of my favorite superhero love interest. No complaints about that casting at all.
