Thor must stop the vengeful Dark Elves from plunging the universe into eternal darkness in this epic tale of heroism and sacrifice. Long ago, the Dark Elves, led by Malekith (Christopher Eccleston), sought to wield the Aether, a powerful weapon capable of enveloping all realms in darkness. Asgardian warriors thwarted their plans, hiding the Aether after Malekith escaped into exile.
In the present, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), still awaiting Thor's return after two years, stumbles upon an anomaly in London linked to the convergence of the Nine Realms, a rare cosmic alignment. Investigating the phenomenon, she is transported to another realm and inadvertently absorbs the Aether. Thor (Chris Hemsworth) discovers her predicament and brings her to Asgard to seek answers. The energy within Jane reawakens Malekith, who launches an assault on Asgard, killing Thor’s mother, Frigga (Rene Russo), and vowing revenge.
Defying Odin's (Sir Anthony Hopkins) orders, Thor teams up with his mischievous brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston), whose loyalty remains uncertain. Together, they embark on a perilous mission to confront Malekith in "The Dark World" and destroy the Aether. Synopsis:
Eons Ago
Bor (Tony Curran), father of Odin (Anthony Hopkins), clashes with the Dark Elf Malekith (Christopher Eccleston), who seeks to plunge the universe into eternal darkness using the Aether, an ancient weapon of infinite destructive power. The Aether, a fluid-like substance capable of transforming matter into dark matter, can only be unleashed during the Convergence, a rare cosmic alignment of the Nine Realms that occurs once every 5,000 years. As the realms align, Bor wrests the Aether from Malekith using the Bifrost. Facing defeat, Malekith orders his forces to crash their ships into Asgard's army, sacrificing his troops to inflict maximum damage.
Despite the attack, Bor emerges victorious, defeating Malekith's enhanced warriors, the Kursed, who are transformed by ingesting part of the Aether. To ensure the Aether’s power remains hidden, Bor seals it within a stone column and buries it in an untraceable location. Unbeknownst to Bor, Malekith, his lieutenant Algrim (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), and a few Dark Elves escape into suspended animation.
Present Day
In Asgard, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is imprisoned for his crimes on Earth. Defiant, Loki claims he sought to rule Earth as a benevolent god. Though Odin considers executing him, Frigga (Rene Russo) intervenes, and Loki is sentenced to imprisonment. Meanwhile, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) leads his allies—Fandral (Zachary Levi), Volstagg (Ray Stevenson), and Sif (Jaimie Alexander)—in quelling marauders on Vanaheim, the homeworld of their comrade Hogun (Tadanobu Asano). This marks the final battle in their campaign to restore peace across the Nine Realms following the reconstruction of the Bifrost.
The Asgardians learn that the Convergence is imminent, causing portals between the realms to appear randomly. On Earth, astrophysicist Dr. Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and her intern Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) investigate anomalies in London linked to the Convergence. Jane is accidentally transported to another realm, where she stumbles upon the Aether's resting place and becomes its host. Heimdall (Idris Elba), the all-seeing guardian of the Bifrost, alerts Thor that Jane has disappeared from his sight, prompting Thor to return to Earth.
Jane reappears on Earth after being missing for five hours, seemingly untouched by the elements. Thor brings her to Asgard, where the Aether's energy is detected within her. Odin recognizes the substance and warns that its reawakening heralds a prophecy of destruction. He recounts how the Nine Realms arose after the universe's creation, following the age of the Dark Elves, who ruled the cosmos in darkness. Malekith, their leader, forged the Aether as a weapon to restore that era.
The Awakening of Malekith
The Aether's release awakens Malekith, who turns Algrim into a Kursed and establishes a base on Svartalfheim. Disguising Algrim as a prisoner, the Dark Elves infiltrate Asgard, seeking Jane. During the ensuing battle, Frigga is killed protecting Jane, and Malekith is forced to retreat. With Asgard weakened and its defenses compromised, Odin insists on fortifying the city, believing Malekith will return. Thor, however, decides to confront the Dark Elves on Svartalfheim. Against Odin's orders, he enlists Loki, who knows of a secret portal to the desolate realm. In return, Loki demands vengeance for Frigga’s death.
The Battle on Svartalfheim
Thor, Loki, and Jane travel to Svartalfheim, where Loki deceives Malekith into extracting the Aether from Jane. However, Thor’s attempt to destroy the Aether fails, and Malekith absorbs its power. As Malekith departs, Loki sacrifices himself to kill Algrim, seemingly dying in Thor’s arms.
Thor and Jane discover another portal and return to Earth, reuniting with Darcy, Dr. Erik Selvig (Stellan SkarsgÃ¥rd), and Ian Boothby (Jonathan Howard). They learn Malekith plans to unleash the Aether at the Convergence's center in Greenwich, destroying the universe to restore the Dark Elves’ reign.
The Final Showdown
Thor battles Malekith across multiple realms, with portals transporting them mid-fight. Using Jane and Erik’s scientific devices, Thor and his team transport Malekith and his ship to Svartalfheim. There, Malekith is crushed beneath the wreckage of his own vessel.
Aftermath
Thor returns to Asgard and declines Odin’s offer of the throne, citing his desire to remain a protector rather than a ruler. As he departs, Odin’s form shifts to reveal Loki alive and impersonating his father.
Mid-Credits and Post-Credits Scenes
Volstagg and Sif entrust the Aether to the enigmatic Collector, warning that keeping two Infinity Stones in one place is too dangerous. The Collector cryptically declares, “One down, five to go.” On Earth, Thor reunites with Jane, while a frost monster from Jotunheim, accidentally transported during the final battle, wreaks havoc in London.
